Bodh Gaya online

where ‘man’ meets ‘enlightenment’…

The ‘enlightened’, beneath the sacred Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.

Great quotes by great people (on compassionate & conscious living)

  • My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am  – George-Bernard-Shaw
  • If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man’- Mark Twain
  • Of all the animals, man is the only one that lies- Mark Twain
  • Truely man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs.  We live by the death of others:  we are burial places!  I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.  ~Leonardo da Vinci
  • If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian~ Paul McCartney
  • Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.  ~Albert Einstein
  • Would you kill your pet dog or cat to eat it?  How about an animal you’re not emotionally attached to?  Is the thought of slaughtering a cow or chicken or pig with your own hands too much to handle?  Instead, would hiring a hit-man to do the job give you enough distance from the emotional discomfort?  What animal did you put a contract out on for your supper last night?  Did you at least make sure that none went to waste and to take a moment to be grateful for its sacrifice?  ~William Shakespeare
  • How can you eat anything with eyes?  ~Will Kellogg
  • Animals are my friends… and I don’t eat my friends.  ~George Bernard Shaw
  • Recognize meat for what it really is:  the antibiotic- and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal.  ~Ingrid Newkirk
  • We all love animals.  Why do we call some “pets” and others “dinner?”  ~k.d. Lang
  • I won’t eat anything that has intelligent life, but I’d gladly eat a network executive or a politician.  ~Marty Feldman
  • A mind of the calibre of mine cannot derive its nutriment from dead, rotten meat.  ~George Bernard Shaw
  • While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?  ~George Bernard Shaw
  • “Thou shalt not kill” does not apply to murder of one’s own kind only, but to all living beings; and this Commandment was inscribed in the human breast long before it was proclaimed from Sinai.  ~Leo Tolstoy
  • Can you really ask what reason Pythagoras had for abstaining from flesh?  For my part I rather wonder both by what accident and in what state of soul or mind the first man did so, touched his mouth to gore and brought his lips to the flesh of a dead creature, he who set forth tables of dead, stale bodies and ventured to call food and nourishment the parts that had a little before bellowed and cried, moved and lived.  How could his eyes endure the slaughter when throats were slit and hides flayed and limbs torn from limb?  How could his nose endure the stench?  How was it that the pollution did not turn away his taste, which made contact with the sores of others and sucked juices and serums from mortal wounds?  ~Plutarch
  • To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being.  I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body.  ~Mahatma Gandhi
  • I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as the savage tribes have left off eating each other….  ~Henry David Thoreau, Walden, 1854
  • As long as human society continues to allow animals to be regularly killed in slaughterhouses, there cannot be any question of peace and prosperity- Issac Newton
  • Refrain from killing knowingly even the trifling insects like a louse, a bug or a mosquito. Use no violence even to gain possession of  wealth or kingdom. Never kill any animals even for the purpose of sacrifice. Non-violence is the greatest of all religions- Mahavir
  • My situation is a solemn one.  Life is offered to me on condition of eating beefsteaks.  But death is better than cannibalism.  My will contains directions for my funeral, which will be followed not by mourning coaches, but by oxen, sheep, flocks of poultry, and a small traveling aquarium of live fish, all wearing white scarfs in honor of the man who perished rather than eat his fellow creatures.  ~George Bernard Shaw
  • Nothing more strongly arouses our disgust than cannibalism, yet we make the same impression on Buddhists and vegetarians, for we feed on babies, though not our own.  ~Robert Louis Stevenson
  • I will not eat anything that walks, runs, skips, hops or crawls.  God knows that I’ve crawled on occasion, and I’m glad that no one ate me.  ~Alex Poulos
  • I did not become a vegetarian for my health, I did it for the health of the chickens.  ~Isaac Newton
  • We don’t need to eat anyone who would run, swim, or fly away if he could.  ~James Cromwell
  • Heart attacks… God’s revenge for eating his little animal friends – Albert Einstein
  • Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn!  You bury it in the ground, and it explodes into an oak!  Bury a sheep, and nothing happens but decay.  ~George Bernard Shaw
  • Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them.  ~Samuel Butler
  • You put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit.  If it eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I’ll buy you the most expensive new car.  ~Harvey Diamond
  • The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way in which its animals are treated– Mahatma Gandhi
  • What Indian Scriptures tell about the meat eaters (or the mansaharis), it has been described in the following passage from the Mansahara Parihasajalpita Stotram: “Those who eat the flesh of other creatures are nothing less than gristle-grinders, blood-drinkers, muscle-munchers, sinew-chewers, carcass-crunchers, flesh-feeders-those who make their throat a garbage pit and their stomach a graveyard-mean, angry, loathsomely jealous, confused and beset by covetousness, who without restraint would lie, deceive, kill or steal to solve immediate problems. They are flesh-feeders, loathsome to the Gods, but friendly to the asuras, who become their Gods and Goddesses, the blood-sucking monsters who inhabit Naraka and deceptively have it decorated to look like the pitriloka, the world of the fathers. To such beings the deluded meat-eaters pay homage and prostrate while munching the succulent flesh off bones.”
Vegan:

  • The human body has no more need for cows’ milk than it does for dogs’ milk, horses’ milk, or giraffes’ milk.  ~Michael Klaper
  • My perspective of veganism was most affected by learning that the veal calf is a by-product of dairying, and that in essence there is a slice of veal in every glass of what I had thought was an innocuous white liquid – milk.  ~Rynn Berry, quoted in Joanne Stepaniak, The Vegan Sourcebook, 1998
  • There is no substitute for mother’s milk.  ~Martin H. Fischer

Useful Links (Enlightenment Guaranteed!)

Below are some really useful, super informative links that you might want to go through.
When free (not necessarily), browse through them, for its all about compassionate living & minimizing your carbon footprints on our planet. There are also E-petitions that you can sign (like ‘no plastic’, ‘save coral reefs’, ‘protect rain forests’ etc). Its a very constructive way to spend our spare time, knowing you have done your bit to save the planet. Because I feel compassion is never limited for humans alone, for its ‘their’ planet too… You might be shocked to know that every second, 1.5 acres of rain forests are destroyed forever.  Act now!

May 23rd

Where were you when the great whales were crying out for mercy and the fish were disappearing from our poisoned rivers and stream? did you write one letter? did you sing one song? or did you just sit there telling yourself that your letter would not be read or your song would not be heard? Where were you when the Earth began to die?… -Robert A Brewer

Today is ‘World Turtle Day’, lets hope & pray the conservation efforts are a grand success & that we may not have any more days dedicated to our lovely ‘soon-to-disappear’ species…

I really love this section of your blog Teju! You have complied a brilliant list of quotes, the wisdom of which is hard to ignore. I am actually a semi-vegetarian (if such a thing exists) in that I do eat fish and eggs but not red meat for quite a while and more recently not white either. I have to confess that having been bought up eating anything (I shudder to think of some of the things I was fed as a child) it was difficult to finally become vegetarian (well, semi-vegetarian)
I wish that my parents could have seen this list and I had been able to have the benefit of it earlier in my life.
I think the problem here in the UK and in many places is that when you go into a supermarket and buy meat, its packaged up in such a way that it no longer looks like what it actually is, a dead animal. I saw a very interesting tv documentary here recently that took a group of teenagers to a slaughter house and showed them the entire process from start to finish. All but one of them were very upset by what they saw. I have to admit it was very uncomfortable viewing. Bear in mind also that this was in the UK where there are extremely tight controls and regulations in place. Even vets and animal welfare agencies make random visits to check that these are being maintained. It must be worse in many counties that do not have these measures in place!
Anyway, I must make sure I memorise one or two of these quotes for the next time somebody can’t understand why I eat only veggeburgers!!

I consider that the purpose of this page has been served, even if it has kick started the whole thinking process in anyone who reads it. If it was able to at least make them stop and think and introspect- if it’s really needed to kill an animal only & only to satisfy one’s taste buds, when we can easily live & thrive on a total vegetarian diet. I’d be elated, if someone decides to give up eating animals and birds altogether!
But, like you rightly said, we are all made to believe that there’s nothing unethical about eating meat, because they are all (meat) so nicely dressed & packed in the supermarkets, we don’t even realize what happened to the animal, the excruciating & unimaginable pain it had to go through before it landed there or on our plates. They all cried, defecated out of fear on seeing others of their own kind get slaughtered right before their eyes, plead to be spared. They were dragged to the abattoir! But, no one ever gets to know these, unless he/she really cares to find out. They call the dead meat differently- like veal for example. Why not call it a new born calf’s flesh instead? These are terms invented by ‘man’ to cover up the guilt. We have all been bought up in way we don’t even realise what we are contributing to. Meat is made to look like just any other vegetable, say a cauliflower or something. I know of many, who after watching the horrendous video of animal slaughter gave up on meat altogether while some even gave up dairy products & turned vegans too. There are others, who want to run away from the truth. They don’t even want to watch the video of these cruelties, in the fear that they might feel guilty for what they are adding to. i can write about these issues eternally! Anyways, enlightenment is something that comes from within… I’m glad to know that you’ve turned ‘semi-vegetarian’ which is still many many times better than a non-vegetarian 🙂 please do spread the message…

Teju, some beautiful and thought-provoking quotes you have compiled. As you have gathered from my blog, I am not a vegetarian, but we have increasingly tried to become more aware and sensitive as to the sources of our food, and seek out humanely raised and sustainably grown/harvested animals. I appreciate the respectful dialogue you encourage, and tolerance toward other views. ~ Kat
